The Newcastle Art Society holds at least four exhibitions each year to promote and sell members original work.
These exhibitions are often held in local shopping centres in the Newcastle and Lake Macquarie areas. Our exhibitions are held to give our members the opportunity to sell to the public and to promote the arts in our local areas. We always hold a raffle of a painting of one of our members works and hold a People’s Choice competition to encourage art appreciation in the community.
Ocean Blue Gallery Belmont
Ocean Blue Gallery is hosting an exhibition of work by Newcastle Art Society members over the months of March and April. The gallery will be open Monday to Saturday with society members in the gallery each saturday. Creative Days will be held on 6 & 13 April with demonstrations, artist talks and extra art on show. These days are something new to the gallery and should be a lot of fun!
Ellen Kilpatrick Award
Lake Macquarie Fair Mount Hutton
As Lake Macquarie Lady Mayoress in 1996, Ellen Kilpatrick officially opened our first shopping centre exhibition in Lake Macquarie Fair, Mount Hutton. The exhibition proved such a success it became an annual event, and over the next few years other centres became involved. It is generally held early in September.
Des Vout Memorial Award
Belmont Citi Centre, Belmont
As manager of the Commonwealth Bank in Newcastle for many years, Des Vout and his wife Jenny were both extremely generous in their support of the society, continuing a long association established in 1959, when the bank became another exhibition venue – until 2003. When Des passed away suddenly, Jenny set up the ‘Des Vout Memorial Award’ in his honour. This competition is now held at Belmont Citi Centre, usually in November each year.
