The Newcastle Art Society holds at least four exhibitions each year to promote and sell members original work.

These exhibitions are often held in local shopping centres in the Newcastle and Lake Macquarie areas. Our exhibitions are held to give our members the opportunity to sell to the public and to promote the arts in our local areas. We always hold a raffle of a painting of one of our members works and hold a People’s Choice competition to encourage art appreciation in the community.

As manager of the Commonwealth Bank in Newcastle for many years, Des Vout and his wife Jenny were both extremely generous in their support of the society, continuing a long association established in 1959, when the bank became another exhibition venue – until 2003. When Des passed away suddenly, Jenny set up the ‘Des Vout Memorial Award’ in his honour. This competition is now held at Belmont Citi Centre, usually in November each year.
